A little bit of history
The African black soap is, also known as Dares Dudu or Alata Samina, holds its origins from the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria, but its production and its uses are more widespread in Ghana. The legend wants it that the African black soap was imported in Ghana by Yoruba women merchants, specialized in the sale of tomatoes and pepper. They were named Alatas (pepper saleswomen). As for Samina, it is a word from the Akan tribe which means “soap”. The word Alata Samina, invented by the Ghanaians, means “the soap of the pepper saleswomen”. Alata Samina is used now everywhere in Ghana.
