Artisanal Soap Making in Quebec – Our Story and Our Values
At Savonnerie Blanhou, our passion for natural handmade soaps was born from a simple desire: to offer body care that is healthier, gentler, and more respectful of the skin and the environment. Located in Quebec, we meticulously handcraft each soap, prioritizing quality ingredients and locally sourced organic oils.
It was in 1998 that I met this charming lady who gave me a soap, telling me that one of her friends had made it by hand. I gladly accepted the gift. I used it the next day, and it was love at first sight. It was then that I began researching manufacturing processes, ingredients, and so on. And off I went!
We were living in St-Hyacinthe at the time, and the internet was not as developed as it is today. I found myself buying ingredients from agricultural producers' suppliers, who were the only ones distributing them.
I managed to get my hands on a few recipes and successfully made my first soap. How should I describe it? Dry, very hard, and, above all, very "cleansing." As for cleaning, it cleaned! But it was my first soap, and I was proud of it. This is how Savonnerie Blanchou was born.
We believe that natural soap should do more than just cleanse. It should nourish, protect, and respect the skin's natural balance. That's why we select vegetable oils known for their benefits, such as organic olive oil, coconut oil, and shea butter, to provide optimal hydration for all skin types, even the most sensitive.
Authentic artisanal manufacturing
Each soap is produced in small batches using the cold process method, an artisanal technique used by our ancestors that preserves the natural properties of the ingredients. We avoid harsh chemicals and favor simple, effective, and transparent formulas.
Our commitment to quality is reflected in every step of manufacturing: from the selection of raw materials to drying and packaging.
Our commitments
Over the years, we have developed our recipes, and for twenty-eight years, we have been manufacturing body care products based on vegetable oils and butters. The soaps, creams, and other products we offer are the result of the research and experiments we have conducted over these years.
Our products are biodegradable, designed with respect for the environment, and offered at fair prices. This is our way of contributing to the preservation and improvement of the human and planetary environment.
Here's a brief overview of our commitments.

Why choose an artisanal soap factory in Quebec?
By choosing Savonnerie Blanhou, you support a local business committed to authenticity and quality. Buying natural soap made in Quebec means supporting a responsible local economy while adopting a healthier and more sustainable body care routine.
We are proud to offer natural Quebec soaps designed with passion, transparency, and respect.
Ingredients
We pay particular attention to the choice and origin of our ingredients, and over the years, we have developed trusting relationships with our suppliers. The raw materials we use come, as much as possible, from organic, sustainable, and fair trade farming.
Why we use organic ingredients?
- better preservation of active ingredients and nutrients
- essential fatty acids (omega 3, 6, 9);
- vitamins (E, A, etc.);
- antioxidants (polyphenols in organic olive oil, for example: these compounds provide real nourishing, repairing, and antioxidant properties to the final soap (especially in cold process saponification);
- respect for the environment and biodiversity
- no synthetic chemical inputs
- better agricultural practices (crop rotation, compost, etc.)
- more authentic smell
We often add other quality ingredients to our recipes – clays, plants, essential oils – which we use to give our products specific properties and extend their scope of action.
A good way to ensure that the products are suitable for you is to check the list of ingredients on the label.
Our soaps
We handcraft our soaps using the cold saponification process. They are primarily distinguished by their main ingredient: organic olive oil, sourced locally. Its benefits for the skin have been recognized for a long time, and it is the basis of centuries-old recipes such as Aleppo soap and Marseille soap. To extend its effects and duration, we add oils and butters to our recipes whose qualities have also long been recognized.
Our experiments and research have also led us to concoct our recipes so that a part of the oils truly floats within the soap and helps nourish your skin when you use it. This is the "superfatting" of the soap.
In addition to the premium ingredients we use, our soaps contain glycerin, which is naturally released during the saponification process (the transformation of the "lye" and oil mixture into soap). Glycerin plays an important role in skin health: it moisturizes by attracting and retaining surrounding moisture.
Now, why choose us?
Here are the main reasons why many people in Quebec (and elsewhere) choose La Savonnerie Blanchou:
- Long-standing experience and expertise. Founded in 1998 (over 28 years of activity in 2025-2026), it is one of the most established artisanal soap factories in Quebec. This inspires confidence: tested recipes, refined over the years, and true mastery of the craft.
- Natural, organic (when possible), and plant-based ingredients. We focus on vegetable-based oils and butters, often from organic farming and fair trade. Our soaps are enriched (superfatted) to nourish and protect the skin, and contain the natural glycerin released during saponification → highly appreciated moisturizing effect.
- Quality traditional inspiration. Our soaps are inspired by classics like Aleppo soap and Marseille soap, but revisited with high-quality plant-based ingredients. The result: gentle, nourishing soaps, suitable for dry/sensitive skin, without compromising cleansing effectiveness.
- Handmade, local, and artisanal. Everything is made by hand in our workshop-boutique in Cowansville. This is true Made in Quebec, with an eco-responsible approach (less plastic, sustainable ingredients). Many Quebecers like to support local artisans rather than large industrial brands.
- Versatility and effectiveness. Our soaps are often described as 3-in-1: they cleanse well, moisturize, and nourish. We also offer special variants (e.g., coconut oil soap rich in fatty acids, or even a "local" lard soap for stubborn stains).
- Accessibility and direct contact. The boutique is open by appointment (Monday to Saturday), free delivery for purchases over $150. You can visit the workshop, ask questions directly to the artisans.
- Good reputation among natural enthusiasts. Present in boutiques like ÔlalaVert (Foster), Vrac et Compagnie (Sutton Junction) and Nouvelle Épicerie (Cowansville), which highlight eco-responsible Quebec suppliers, and positive feedback on the quality of ingredients and the gentleness of the products.
In summary: you choose Blanchou when you want an artisanal Quebec soap, natural/organic, truly nourishing (not just a basic cleanser), crafted with passion for a long time, and you prefer to support the local Quebec economy rather than imported industrial products.
Located in Cowansville, in the Eastern Townships, Savonnerie Blanchou carefully creates handmade natural soaps.
